March                    Mentoring Workshop     WEDNESDAY March 17th, 2010

A total of 12 participants attended the BPW Winnipeg Central Mentoring Workshop held at the Best Western Pembina Inn & Suites on Wednesday March 17th, 2010.Based on the evaluations received as well as e-mails and conversations following the event, the participants felt the material presented was interesting, insightful and mentally satisfying.  Some participants felt that there would have been a benefit for more discussion but understood time was of the essence to complete all the material in the three hours.

BPW Winnipeg Central secured two new members after the workshop and one more for the 2010-2011 year.   There is definitely interest in holding more of the BPW Canada modules next year and BPW Winnipeg Central would like to make it a mandatory  annual event to hold for its members.

February 17, 2010 - International Night  - We chose to honour our BPW sisters in Ukraine. 'Humanitarian Aid to Ukraine'

Presented by Sylvia Todaschuk, Elsie Liwiski and Marcella Fostey, who spent the month of December in Ukraine distributing medical and surgical supplies to 8 hospitals and a few orphanages in Ukraine.

These supplies were operating tables, medical supply cabinets, surgical tables, wheelchairs, comode chairs, baby cribs and bassinetts, surgical tools and beds. These supplies were obtained from the hospitals here and across the province. All hallways in the hospitals in Ukraine were empty. No hallway medicine there at all, in fact hospitals had empty beds. Yes---empty beds!  The reason for that being that people in Ukraine have to pay for their hospitalization and services and it is very costly.

Doctors in Ukraine make $300.00 US a month, nurses $70.00 US a month and maintenance $25.00 US a month. Doctors also have to do the gardening and look after the orchards in their off hours. There is no activity outside on the grounds. No one is seen walking a patient or wheeling a patient or people just visiting. Hospital beds are 10-12 side by side in a room. Hospitals are very sanitary and clean. Their laundry facilities are very ancient. Washing machines work but laundry has to be hung outside.

At one orphanage they happened to be there at their lunch hour and all the children got for lunch was a bowl of broth and dried cubes of bread.  We should be very thankful for the free country we live in and for what we have. BPW Ukraine is doing a great job in helping their women. Please go to their website www.bpw.donetsk.ua/ and check out their activities.

Menu for International Night consisted of perogies, cabbage rolls, cheese rolls, garlic sausage, macaroni casserol, cornmeal dressing, poppyseed rolls, poppyseed cake and cheese cake made with cottage cheese.

Our entertainer for the evening was Esther Juce who is well known in the Ukrainian community for her delicate performances on the Bandura (a 55 stringed Ukrainian instrument shaped like a harp and requires good strong fingernails to play it). She delighted us with her heavenly voice accompanied by the Bandura.  Also, President Sharla led in the candlelight service and got everyone attending involved. It was a very impressive cerenony.

Sofia's is a great outlet for Barb--to help women in building their self esteem and she honors the women who shop at her establishment by giving them exceptional service.
